1899 New York City Landmark Stereo View ––- Tomb of Ulysses S. Grant – Riverside Park – United States President & Civil War General & Union Commander

Vintage 1899 real photo close-up stereo view of famous New York City landmark - the Tomb of U. S. Grant - commanding general for the Union during the Civil War, and later President of the United States (1869-1877). Who has not heard the question, "Who is buried in Grant's Tomb?" This is it what they are talking about!

A well-known New York City historical landmark, Grant's Tomb is located in Riverside Park on Manhattan's upper west-side ---- high above the Hudson River. When Grant died in 1885, it was his wish to be buried in New York City. This tomb was finally completed in 1897, only two years before this photo was taken.

The 100' square classical Doric style gray Maine granite tomb, is capped with an Ionic cupola rising to 150' above the surrounding grounds. This close-up is taken looking north from the long, broad sidewalk leading up to the Tomb's portico. In the foreground are mostly men (only one woman in period 1890s dress) visitors going to and coming from the entrance.

Back has English caption repeated in English, French, German, Spanish, Russian and probably Italian, and also five lengthy text paragraphs of information regarding the tomb. Published by Underwood & Underwood of New York and other cities. Right margin has Underwood's "Sun Sculpture" trademark. Copyright is 1899 by Strohmeyer & Wyman, from whom Underwood purchased the negative.

PHOTO NOTE: The actual albumen (sepia toned) real photo images are clean, crisp, sharp and in good condition. Curved cards do not always scan or photo well. The actual images as viewed through a stereo viewer are MUCH sharper than they appear in the photo images. The grainy texture is not present in the original photos. Any light scratches and small defects are accentuated by the photo process, and are imperceptible through the stereo viewer. Bright spots and shiny areas are all reflections from the camera flash, and do not appear on the actual photos.

3-D EFFECT: Curved mounted card creates an exceptional 3-D effect through the stereo viewer.

CONDITION NOTE: The images are in excellent condition. The top right corner of the card is slightly rounded.
