Published by famous school book publisher Scott Foresman and Company. First and Second Reader are 160-pages and 192-pages respectively, and measure 8" x 6-1/4".
The First Reader includes an Introduction for the music teacher; eight chapters on the fundamentals of music and representative songs for use in the primary grades, together with a Comprehensive Index. Chapter I includes Rote Songs; the Tonic Chord and Scale; an the Essential Elements of Music Notation for teachers and beginners. Chapter II – Songs for Sight Reading Study; Chords and Scales Studies: Studies in Rhythm; and Chord Studies. Chapter III – Songs for Study of Chromatic Tones; and Chromatic Studies. Chapter IV – Songs Emphasizing More Unusual; the Study of Intervals; and Studies Showing Thirds, Fourths and Sixths. Chapter V – Songs Comparing Minor and Major Keys; Chapter VI - Songs Emphasizing Unusual Rhythms. Chapter VII – Part Songs; and Glossary of Common Musical Terms; Chapter VIII – Patriotic and Occasional Songs.
The Second Reader contains an Introduction for music teacher on advanced music instruction; seven chapters on music instruction and representative songs for use in grammar school grades Five through Eight; together with a Comprehensive Index. Chapter I includes Songs Illustrating Obvious Melodic Structure; Studies in Rhythm; Chord Studies; The Study of Intervals; and Studies Showing Thirds, Fourths and Sixths. Chapter II – Songs for the Study of Chromatic and Modulating Tones and Chromatic Studies. Chapter III – Part Songs. Chapter IV – Comparison of the Major and Minor Keys. Chapter V – Songs Containing Modulating Tones; and Musical Phrases Illustrating Modulating Tones. Chapter VI - Miscellaneous Songs for Study and Practice. Chapter VII – Patriotic and Miscellaneous Songs; Advanced Essential Elements of Notation; and an Advanced Glossary of Music Terms.
CONDITION: Both volumes are tightly bound and complete. Front and back cover boards are intact, unbroken and well attached on both volumes. The First Reader has had particularly hard use, as is obvious from the photos of the front cover. Both front and back cover boards are heavily soiled inside and out, and worn along the spine and outside edges. The corners and spine ends are crushed and damaged. The inside covers and front pages have some writing and child's art work added. The inside pages near either end are more heavily soiled than those further away from the covers, and all show moderate age discoloration.
