Georgian 12K Gold Memory Locket Seed Pearl & Amethyst

Gorgeous. Exquisite. One of a Kind...just like her. This is an ever so sweet yet elegant memory locket from around 1800-1820 that features the two sided antique glass panels that are surrounded by natural seed pearls and faceted amethyst stones. In perfect operating condition, this is an amazing beauty that is sure to please.

The locket measures 1 1/8" tall (28.5mm) including the necklace bail with the locket setting itself measuring 1 inch tall (25.5mm) by 13/16" wide, or 20.5mm. The glass sections measure just under 3/4" tall, or 17.5mm. The glass door still closes with a distinctive click. The design of the locket is in a sunburst pattern with 15 amethysts and 29 seed pearls alternating. Each amethyst measures approximately 2.25mm in diameter and the seed pearls range in size from just under 2mm to just over 2mm. All the stones appear to be original. The locket door opens on the back side and on this back glass has been inscribed "J C Smith". Written in simple cursive by hand and not engraved, this most likely was the name of the lost loved one for which this memory locket was created. The glass panels are original and display very slight surface scratching for their age. They do have magnification capabilities and are most likely rock crystals, which can be buffed. When worn, neither the inscription or scratches can be seen with the naked eye and this locket is just an exquisite example of fine antique jewelry from days long ago.

There are no hallmarks on this antique treasure, but the gold has tested at 12K. The locket itself weighs 4.1 grams and is very nicely sized. The pictured chain as a modern 14K gold 20" box chain that is available separately, priced at $149.00. It has a nice silky design to it that doesn't kink easily (yeah!) and accents this locket beautifully.

Memory lockets such as this would have held a keepsake of a dearly departed loved one. Such jewelry was common with brooches, lockets and rings created as special memorials worn during and long after the mourning period. Pearls were used in memorial jewelry to symbolize the tears of sorrow. However, the alluring beauty that natural seed pearls add to any piece of jewelry is remarkable as their antique patina is just so captivating, bringing only tears of joy today.

Lockets have continued to be popular jewelry items since the Georgian Period. While the styles, designs, stones and metals may change, the cherished locket still continues amaze its audience with its magical secret compartment.

This beautiful locket would make an excellent gift for the locket lover on your gift list. It is such a splendid pendant in its own right, even if you can resist testing its hinged glass door from time to time. A beautiful creation for all reasons and seasons.

It will be delivered in an elegant gift box, perfect for gift giving and storage.
