This dress is just amazing - probably a mourning item, it dates to the late Victorian Era. Although is in generally good condition, the fabric is delicate, and we recommend this beautiful item be enjoyed for its style and history, but it may not stand up well to being worn due to the age and fragility of the fabric.
The fabric of this dress is fine silk, with the exception of the under blouse which is made of white cotton. The bib is mostly hidden, with just a sliver visible above the neckline when the front of the dress is closed. There is a shawl collar finished with a bit of black lace. The gathered waist crosses over in front and secures with snap and hook closures - there is enough gathering so that the skirt is fairly full. There are no buttons or slits on the cuffs, they just pull on over the hand.
This dress is in good condition, but as usually happens with silk of this age, the fabric has some defects. There are some small holes and thin spots in the fabric, mostly on the sleeves and back of the skirt. There is one hole in the back of the skirt that is about the size of a dime. There is also a little staining on the back inside of the cotton shirt that is not seen when the dress is buttoned up. When on display, none of these defects are obvious as they are small and fade into the folds of the fabric.
