We have seen a fair number of woven hair pins and brooches, but items such as this watch fob/chain don't seem to have survived as well given that the weaving is exposed and the pieces were actually used, exposing them to wear and tear. So, this is a really nice find. It is hand woven in light brown hair, and for the most part the weaving is in good condition, with a few fraying spots. It is a wonderful piece of history, dating to the Victorian era.
The fob measures 7 1/2" long, not including the hook for the watch. It is 7/8" wide. The end pieces have a beautiful ornate design on one side, and have a gold surface. We do not know the karat or if it is rolled gold or solid; there are no markings. We can clearly see that the hook is rolled gold, as we can see the seams.
