For your consideration is a wonderful Mesh Vanity Compact Purse marked on the inside (hard to read):Mesh, Whiting & Davis Co., Bags, Reg. U.S. The mesh is in a coral, gray & white enamel design both on the top & bottom. Both mesh areas are attached to & by small metal rings all around the silvertone colored metal frames. (The rings are all attached & there is not any holes!) The very top is also in a pretty silvertone colored filigre design. This is where the gray colored adjustable strap is attached & in working condition. There are 3 different layers to open, which is opened & held closed by a tight flip style silvertone clasp. There is a pretty darker blue round stone in the center of this clasp. Once opened the first layer displays a mirror on the inside upper section of the lid, and a rouge compartment on the lower section. (The original rouge puff is still present.) When you raise the metal disk to the 2nd section or compartment you find another mirror on the upper part & the powder on the lower part. (Again! The original dark blue or teal colored powder puff is present). Lift this layer & you have the mesh interior of the purse. This is where you would put your coins, etc.
CONDITION: This vanity purse is from around the early 1900s to 1920s! So for a mesh purse of 90 to 100 years old, this purse is in excellent vintage used condition. There are a few minor issues, however! Some of the enamel paint on the mesh has rubbed off, the frame is a little off when closed, but not too bad & hardly noticeable. The metal or aluminum frame on the inside of the compact compartments show some dullness due to use. It is also missing the metal chain tassel that hung on the bottom, which is usually one of the first things that gets lost on this kind of purse. Thus, there is a small piece of thread hanging from the bottom where it was attached. (I decided to not remove it & let the new owner make that decision!)
This vanity purse is hard to find & is very collectable! A great addition to any mesh purse or vanity purse collections! Dimensions are approx. (Bag Only): 5"L. X 2 1/2"Rd. (Handle Only): 6 1/2"L. (Any flaws are all minor & only mentioned for accuracy! Price quoted takes into consideration any flaws mentioned above!)
(Please see page 74 of "Vintage Vanity Bags & Purses" by Roselyn Gerson, copyright 1994. If in mint condition this purse is estimated at approx. $550 to $750 in this book)
