Papier Mache items of the Victorian era are magnificent. This box is no exception. It measures 7 1/2" x 6" x 4". I believe this box is British for the center decoration on the lid is the round belt used in many crests and symbols. The center in the belt is enameled red with a rose of Mother of Pearl. The belt itself is filled with MOP as well. There are intricate gilding designs on the lid and all four sides. The lid has several bands framing the center. Mother of Pearl, gilding with enamel beads, as well as more gilding. The key escutcheon is metal. There is no key. The inside is lined in lavender paper. The top has purple silk lining. The top tray has compartments, 2 of which has purple silk covers. There is even a thimble compartment. The bottom has worn purple paper covering. The condition is remarkable. The back left corner is chipped. The hinges are original and intact. A very special box.
