This sampler has been handled quite differently than most I have acquired. It has a paper backing sewn to the fabric of the sampler and framed with a silk ribbon. The sampler measures 14" square. The sampler is done in two colors. The blue is quite vivid with little or no fading. The tan (could have been any color) is quite faded. The sampler consisted of rows of alphabetic letters and numerals in various stitches. There are rows of dividing lines show different borders. The bottom row with a Greek Key design is especially nice. The sampler has the name, Sophie Mielson and the date 1853. The back paper lining has the name and date repeated. It also says it is said to be from Bornholm Denmark. Given to Ella Dickinson Easter 1950. There is a light water stain on the right hand side. The silk ribbon is deteriorating. There are no holes or missing stitches. A nice early sampler.
