A lovely Master salt cellar made of sterling silver and marked on the back with a hallmark for Whiting Sterling Com. and a number also imprinted. Whiting was an American Silver Co. in New York and was established in 1844.
This salt cellar has a nice neo-classical design and a long shape. The initials look to be like "I H D". It has been cleaned some but it has a few tiny spots that look like the salt might have stayed in the cellar to long spotting the sterling. I guess if you rub enough you can get more of it out. The spots are really small but look big in these enlarged pictures. Still beautiful and a 9 out of 10. It weighs 0.6 OZ of sterling.. and is 3" by 2".
This piece is between 1866-1904. In 1905 Whiting started date stamping his sterling pieces. The Company first originated in 1844, and was sold out to the Gorham Silver Co. 1n 1924. A lovely piece.
