This is a beautiful and heavy bronze box. It is French. The only mark I find on it is the mountain like scene in one of the pictures shown here. I'm not sure if it is a mark or not. French marks are the hardest to find and decipher. Although "French" is written all over it, by its wonderful style and work. It is a stunning piece.
The nude cherub is lying on a clam-type shell. The whole piece is made of bronze. It has a secure and sturdy hinge. The nude cherub or boy is lying asleep on a cloth atop the large clam shell. The clam shell rests on top of three fish, which are on top of the main base of the sculptured bronze.
It looks like a small version of what would be in the beautiful fountains of Versailles, France.
The bronze sculpture red box is 4 3/4" wide at the base and stands 3 1/4" tall. It weighs 1 Lb. 11 oz. without packaging. The dealer I purchased it from dated it from 1840-1880. Very unique and stunning. A quality piece for sure. A mold would be sculpted to make up this piece. Truly a piece of art, and the pictures do not do it justice. Really lovely. And so French!
