"The Wild Swans" was written by Hans Christian Andersen. This is a 3D "Living Storybooks" designed and manufactured by Shiba Productions in the 1960s and distributed by New York-based publisher Golden Press. Shiba Productions was a puppet animation studio that was founded in 1958 by three men: writer/editor Tadasu Iizawa, artist/designer Shigeru Hijikata, and puppet maker and animator Kihachirō Kawamoto. The studio specialized in puppet animation for television commercials. In addition to animation, Shiba Productions also created puppets for picture books, magazines, and print advertising.
"Living Storybooks" were called such not only because they feature photographs of three-dimensional puppets and sets, but also because the front cover features a full color lenticular picture or hologram on the front cover.
The Wild Swan has thick card pages and features 18 full colour pages and 14 black and white pages with text. The book is in very good vintage condition. There is some light scuffing on the front and edges of the cover. The paste down lenticular card on the cover has some lifting of the black paper around it (see photos). The pages are clean and the binding tight.
A remarkable book for the puppet collector or book collector.
