Woman Churning Design ~ Universal Cambridge Water Jug

This ivory colored Ironstone water jug / pitcher is somewhat typical of the water bottles put out by most potteries in the 1930's-50's but it does have a rather unique shape. These jugs were often utilized and referred to as refrigerator "bottles". This one is from Universal Potteries as the back stamp indicates. Other potteries manufactured similar patterns produced in the same time frame but this pattern is a rather rare find. The brown design features a Milk Maid; in Primitive dress. She may represent the Colonial period or perhaps just a Country woman, in front of her churn. The scene offers the warmth of a fireplace, a cat on a braided rug....a feeling of "home and hearth"-- This jug remains in great condition--particularly in comparison to those generally found. These bottles were often used daily, not usually a display item. This one is in such good condition, I dare to say it was used very little. There are NO chips or cracks. The only crazing is on the actual stopper. The cork for the stopper is in the neck of the jug and still holds the stopper intact very well--though, as you can see, it has crumbled around one edge over the years. The bottle is clean inside and out. The design is remarkably fully intact on both sides of the square pitcher.
