1980's Designer Artist Hand Loomed Skirt and Top

Marika Contompasis is one of a small group of contemporary designers whose work has made the transition from fashionable art to art in fashion. The New York Metropolitan Museum of Art permanent collection has a 1977 work by Marika. This set is from 1987 and was bought at Neiman Marcus in Dallas. It is marked small as the size but since it was hand loomed the material gives like a knit. The skirt is 34” in length from waistband to hem with an elastic waistband of 24” when not stretched out. Hip measurement is 31” not stretched. It is suppose to be a tight fitting skirt. The tunic top is 27” from top of shoulder to bottom edge, 38” around chest area with 17” long sleeves. Neck measures 8 ½” across. It is a very unique a beautiful piece of art that can be worn anytime with the luscious colors of pink, crème and almost maroon in color. I believe the fabric is silk but not positive since there is no label that tells you that.
