This is part of a wonderful collection of English Egg Cups that I have just unpacked. It features three different Nursery Rhymes, all hand painted in bright colors, over a black transfer outline. #1 is, Sing a Song of Sixpence showing the king in his regal red robes trimmed in ermine, and the six and twenty blackbirds that have just escaped from the pie. #2 is Old Mother Hubbard breaking the bad news to her dog, that there are no bones left in the cupboard. #3 is Simple Simon went a fishing, for to catch a whale, and shows the little boy on his tripod stool dangling his fishing line into a pail of water. It is absolutely adorable and the low squat conical shape was so practical for small children in the nursery, almost impossible to knock over. It measures 2 3/4" across at the base and 1 3/4" at the top, by 1 1/2" tall. Children's items like this that were in daily use are so hard to find in good condition, this one is very good, with no chips or cracks, just a light crazing and minor wear to the paint mainly on the rim, just enough to add character and not detract from the beauty or value. There is no factory mark just 2 painters marks, but it just has to be English from the 30s or earlier. Please be sure to click on photo for an enlargement and more pictures so that you can really enjoy this great item. Thank you for shopping with us and please take a minute or two to check out some of our other treasures.
