Antique Leather Bucket or Dry Measure

This interesting antique leather bucket, or dry measure, was found in the stables of an old country estate. It was used to measure out the oats to feed the horses, and would be from the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. It stands 8” tall and measures 7 ½” front to back, across the top, 8 ½” side to side, because of the way it is shaped, which makes it easier to hold, and adds strength. The condition is excellent for a piece that was used on a daily basis for many years, the signs of normal wear just add to the character and appeal, and all the stitching is in good order. I have one of these which I use every Christmas with a Poinsettia and it is really striking, but this could have many uses in any home, to hold magazines, kindling for the fire, as a waste paper bucket in a man’s office or study, or even to hold a dried flower arrangement. These are very hard to find in such good condition, a real find, and a great decorator item.
