Gretna Green Motto Ware Butter Dish

This great old Souvenir Butter Dish is from Gretna Green, which is the first place you come too, passing over the border from England to Scotland. In years gone by young couples would elope to Gretna Green where they could get married without their parents permission. This lovely dish is all hand painted in cobalt blue, pink, mauve and green, with Scottish Thistles and the motto "Be Canny Wi' Th' Butter, It's Nair Sae Cheap". There is also a picture of "The First House in Scotland, Gretna Green". This is signed Carlton Ware, and was made by Wiltshaw & Robinson in Stoke on Trent in Staffordshire, England and has the mark used from 1925 to the 50s. It measures 6 1/4" across the base and stands 3 1/2" tall, the condition is excellent, it looks as if it has never been used. Please be sure to click on photo for enlargement and more pictures, so that you can really enjoy this lovely piece and take a minute or two to check out some of our other treasures.
