This vintage piece of black Americana looks like it is carved from wood but it is actually made of a composition material. The black boy has big eyes and a large grin as he peers around the side of the thermometer as though he’s trying to hide the fact that his pants are partially down. Syroco, a combination of a wood compound and casting fluids that were poured into molds was first used by the Syracuse Ornamental Company which later became Syroco, Inc. but other companies also used the process to create decorative pieces like this piece. The glass thermometer is attached to a piece of paper which is glued to the figure. This was made by Multi Products, Inc. and has a 1949 copyright on the back side.
It base measures about 3 3/8” by 2 1/8” and it measures about 5” high. It is in very good condition with minimal wear. The paper backing of the thermometer is wrinkled and scratched and the gold color is weak. The thermometer seems to be pretty accurate.
