This vintage ice cream dipper is a No.31 Gilchrist Automatic Ice Cream Disher. Gilchrist's were used in most early soda fountain shops to scoop your favorite ice cream. It was probably the most popular and commonly used scoop in the industry. This is one of the smaller round bowl sizes, a number 30 meaning thirty scoops to the quart. It is nickel plated brass except for the bowl and scraper which are made of German Silver and it has a wood handle. It is marked Gilchrist’s No. 31 on the thumb lever and the scraper inside the bowl is marked "30". The patent for these scoops was issued in 1915.
It measures about 10 ½” in length and the bowl measures about 1 7/8” in diameter. It is in good condition with minor wear and a spring mechanism that works well. There are minimal faint scratches and tiny nicks on the edge from use and small areas, primarily on the thumb lever, where the plating is worn to the brass. This scoop is cleaned and polished, not re-plated and not lacquered and in good original condition.
