Old Pyrography Tie Box - Art Nouveau Design

Known as Flemish folk art, this vintage tie box is made from wood. The images are burned into the wood, a technique called pyrography. The nicely done design is of a woman’s portrait, done in the art nouveau style, with free flowing hair. It is further enhanced with two roses and the word “Ties”. Around much of the artwork and around the sides of the box, the wood burning is done to mimic a wood grain. The design on the top of the lid is repeated on the inside lid. The end grain edges of the wood are also burned with diagonal lines. The lid has two small brass hinges at the back. The wood is light in weight and rather nondescript like pine or fir. I would guess this to be from the early 1900's.

It measures about 4 7/8” deep by 12” long 1 3/8” high. It is in very nice condition with minimal wear. The lid has a has a very slight warp to it. The top of the lid is lighter with less depth of color than the inside. It is very interesting that the photos make it look like the roses have a blush of yellow color but in person there is no color seen. I have not tried to oil or wax this piece.

The pictures are not shown at actual size. Please refer to the description for actual measurements. Don't forget to check out the other antique hair receiver in our shop!
