This striking, vintage hat is made of a very dark, almost black, short nap felt. It is adorned with what appears to be an array of brown and cream colored ostrich feathers. The hat is molded to look as though it has a wide, folded brim with a sculptured detail. The crown is small and domed and there is a wide grosgrain ribbon at the base of the crown slightly behind the brim. Attached at the top is a reddish brown, net veil that covers the front half and would fall gently over the face. Inside the hat is a stamped label that reads; Made in U.S.A. - Merrimac Hat Corp., and what would appear to be; 94% Wool 6% Aralac Fiber. Sewn into the narrow grosgrain ribbon along the inside edge is a tag that reads; Adjustable (although I can’t figure how). I would assume this is from the 1930’s or 40’s.
The opening measures about 7” by 6 ¼” or about 20 ½” in circumference. The brim measures about 2 ¼” high and it measures about 4” high at the crown. It is in very good condition with gentle wear and lightly ruffled feathers.
