This vintage, two piece train set is called a Battery Cable Express Train. The tin engine and coal tender are nicely lithographed. The front of the engine is a hinged door to the battery compartment and it takes a single “C” cell battery. On the top of the engine is a small Stop /Go switch. The engine has the T.N Trademark and is marked: Made in Japan. The train has a rubber cable that was to be laid out to form the track, then the guide rail on the bottom of the locomotive was placed over the cable and the train would follow the shape of the track. All of this comes in the original box with a nice depiction of a locomotive on the front of the lid and directions on the inside of the lid.
The engine measures about 4 ¾” long by 2 5/8” high and the coal car2 7/8” long excluding the tongue by 2 1/8” high. The two pieces attached measure about 7 7/8” long. They are both in very good condition with minimal wear. The engine does work but the wheels don’t seem to have much traction, probably because the rubber on the wheels is hard.
The cable is fragile so I did not try to uncoil it and I would not just that it be used. It still has part of its original cellophane bag.
The box measures about 6” square by 2” high. IT is in nice condition but the edges are worn and two corners have been torn and somewhat repaired. It has the original insert for the cars to nest in but the cardboard is torn.
The pictures are not shown at actual size. Please refer to the description for actual measurements.
