This wonderful, vintage item is called The Princess No. 1212. It is a curling iron heater that used alcohol as the heat source. The base is painted metal with a small brass, lidded pot and two brass brackets that the curling iron would rest upon while it was warming up. The base has a litho of a young girl curling her hair. It reads; The “Princess” Curling Iron Heater - Hochin’s Popular Specialty No. 1212. The brass brackets are embossed with a leaf design and they are peened to the base. The little pot is filled with a wadding. According to the box this is apparently asbestos. The lid for the reservoir is tethered to the base by a little chain. The lid would be used as a damper to snuff the flame. I believe this is from the late 1800’s.
The base measure about 5 7/8” by 2 ¼” and the height at the tallest bracket is about 1 ¾” off the table. It is in very nice, original condition. The dark green paint has minor wear and a little discoloration around the pot, either from the alcohol or heat. The brass is discolored and has not been polished of its patina.
The heater comes with its original cardboard box. On the side of the box it reads; Houchin’s Curling Iron Heaters and Alcohol Stoves Are the Best - Made in U.S.A. The top of the box has a picture of the heater in use plus directions. The box measures about 6” by 2 3/8” by 1 7/8” and is nice but weak. One end is missing completely and the cardboard is brittle. The top is darkened from age the there are areas where tape was probably removed which removed the top layer of paper. Nonetheless, it is nice to have a box with some identifying information.
