This colorful toy is a vintage wind up called "Swimmer". The body of the child is plastic and the arms are painted tin. The wind-up mechanism is attached on the bottom side and when it is wound the arms rotate in a swimming motion. Apparently these were used as water toys which might explain why there aren't a lot in good condition. This was made in a couple of different versions and colors and although this one is wearing a pink bathing suit it is probably the boy since the girl version has a longer, slightly bobbed hairstyle. The celluloid is marked on the back but it is too blurred to make out. It measures about 5 ¾" long with the arm extended and is in very good, working condition. The gears are noisy when it is wound but it runs smoothly.
It has its original cardboard box with a nice graphics of divers in several different positions. It has the "MyFriend", globe logo and is a Toyland Toy - Made in Japan. This company made toys pre-war and into the Occupied Japan period. The box measures 2 ¼" square by 5 ½" and is in very good condition with minimal crease and edge wear. The panel the has "Pat. Pending" has a tear off of the paper and remnants of a paper sticker that could have been someone's price sticker. There is also a discolored spot on the bottom where there was a sticker.
