This vintage piece of Union Leader Tobacco advertising is from the early 1900's. It's an old, folding, paper-like cup with its original envelope. The; Sanitary Drinking Cup, was made by a company by the same name in New York. Also written on the front is the name UNION LEADER. On the back (see inset) it says; Life Cup Pat. May 10, 1910 Reg. U.S. Pat. Office. The cup is made of an oil cloth type material with a waxed paper insert. When the sides are squeezed together, it opens to form a cup and hold liquid. The colored, outer layer of the oil cloth has a few flakes off both edges where it folds, otherwise it is in very good condition.
The original envelope is a heavy maroon paper (darker than the picture) into which the cup fits. On the front of the envelope is the Union Leader logo, Uncle Sam smoking a pipe. Next to him is an oversized package of Union Leader Cut Plug tobacco. Along the side of the package it says 5c Size. The flap of the envelope is torn at the fold about 1" and it continues onto the front about 1/2". The flap itself has a dark stain where there had apparently been a price tag. It measures almost 4" long by 3 3/8" at the widest point and 2 3/4" at the narrowest point.
Overall it is in fairly good condition.
