This vintage purse is made from an alligator hide with rich color. The front flap of the purse is somewhat simple with the ridged back scales tapering toward the bottom. The back side of the purse appears to have small pockets in the lower corners but these are apparently part of the hind legs of the gator which gives the design of the purse a unique dimension. There is a short strap on the top edge that can be raised slightly for carrying or slid into the slits so it lies almost flat when being used as a clutch. The edges are sewn together with what appears to be a vinyl cover, heavy duty lacing fabric. Inside there are two compartments divided by a zippered compartment. This purse does not accordion open very far so it would accommodate note books better than a hairbrush. It has a snap closure and on the corner of the flap it is stamped, in gold, Genuine Alligator - Made in Cuba.
It measures about 11" wide by 6 ¾" high by about 1 ¾" deep. It is in very nice condition with minor wear. The skin has light wear on the raised, horned ridges. There are several small holes, mostly in pairs and primarily on the front flap. I have pointed out some of them in the photos. I tend to think they were done in the tanning process but do not really know. The snap is tight but awkward to deal with. The inside the zipper works properly and it is generally clean and odor free.
