Old, Moldacot Sewing Machine with Original Tin Box

This unusual, vintage contraption is a Moldacot Pocket Sewing Machine. It is a small machine which would lead you to believe it was a toy sewing machine but this well made machine was sold as a "perfect lock stitch sewing machine that will take any kind of material from the finest linen to the stoutest cloth." It appears this was an overstatement. It was originally patented by S.A. Rosenthal of Berlin in 1885 then manufactured by the Moldacot Company of London in 1886 & 1887. It is made to be clamped to a table and has a very small bobbin in a shuttle to create the lock stitch. The presser foot feeds the fabric towards the operator. The plate reads; No. 105974 - Moldacot - Patent London, with an anchor logo below.

It is a very nice machine in good original condition. The nickel plating is in nice condition with minimal wear. The wood knob on the crank has two small cracks but is still in tact and tightly in place. The machine measures about 7 1/2" in length excluding the clamp with the needle raised to its highest point.

This comes with its original tin "box" which has a picture of the machine on the front of the lid and instructions printed on the inside. The long sides both read; The Moldacot Patent Sewing Machine and both ends are advertising Horrockses Calicos. The tin is black with gold and has some rust issues. It measures about 8" by 2 13/16" by 1 1/2".
