This vintage, glass and wood display case was probably used in the early 1900's in an old haberdashery or general store. The bottom and sides are made of 5/8" oak and the top and front are glass. The back has an oak door with a bullet catch that opens from the bottom with a small brass knob with three brass hinges at the top.
The front glass has the original inside decal that reads; Sealpackerchief with the registered Trade Mark logo and three patent dates from 1909 to 1918.
On the inside there is a gold and red decal on the bottom which reads; This case is loaned with the understanding that it be used only for the display of Sealpackerchief. It also shows it was from The International Handkerchief Manufacturing Company of New York.
The top of the side pieces have a hole about 1 ½" from the back edge that are original to the case. The holes were for a display bar which we have seen on a case like this before. It was missing on this case so we have fabricated a removable one based on what we remembered. We added the eyelets on the underside of the bar in order to display an original Sealpackerchief package with its colorful graphics that include a parrot.
It makes a great display for a country store or similar setting the way we have it shown in the last picture but it can also be used without the props. The "handkerchiefs" are phony, that is to say they are pieces of linen which are cut, ironed and folded but they have raw, un-sewn edges and are offered with the case for display and the illusion.
The case alone measures about 18 ¾" by 6 ½" deep by 6" high and is in very good original condition. The finish and the decals are crisp and clean with minimal wear. The glass is undamaged and the hardware is original although we have replaced the rubber feet on the bottom. It is a heavy duty case for its size.
With the bar in place it measure about 12 ¾" high and 21 ¼" wide. This piece, as previously stated, is not original.
The pictures are not shown at actual size. Please refer to the description for actual measurements.
