This funny, vintage porcelain whimsey is one of the many Japanese "smoking heads". The bald man with his mouth agape looks as though he`s in pain with his drooping eyes distorting his eyes. It can be used as an ashtray or simply a novelty. A lit cigarette can be placed in his mouth and the smoke would stream out of the many holes in his head and his ears where there are holes. The paint is underglaze except, I believe, for his mouth and the black which has a matte finish. These often have a saying on the front panel. This one doesn't but may have had something affixed there at some time as there is a residue like old glue perhaps. On the bottom is a foil label which reads; Hand Painted - Lenwile China - Ardalt - Japan. There is also a number and a NC mark and is probably from the late 1930's through the 50's.
It measures about 5 ¼" tall and is in very good condition with minimal wear and no damage.
