Old, Metal, Garment Hanger with Unusual Spring Mechanism

This vintage hanger was manufactured by Chas A. Stewart with a patent number dating it to 1941. The ends have attachments that could be used as clips or, with the slightly textured edges inside a waistband and the spring mechanism depressed and then released, a garment could be held by tension.

It measures about 11 3/4" across in the extended position and about 7 ¾" in total height. It appears a bit dirty but part of the discoloration is the original coating on the metal. To remove the grime would also remove the coating, the decision to do that will be left to the next owner. One of the clip ends is bent and will not work as a clip as it is.
