British Rose Lead Flat Back Chess Set
The Rose Chessmen, named after Mildred Rose who patented it, is a World War II-era set modeled after the Staunton chess playing pieces. The Staunton chessmen is the design used for all world chest federation and United States Chess Federation events. Howard Staunton, of the Illustrated London News, recommended and endorsed the sets of chess shown in the News. Thus, the Staunton chessmen.
The bottom of each piece is marked "Rose." They are also marked "Made in England." On some of them, a four digit patent number is visible.
The king is 2" or 5.07 cm tall. The box is not original to the set of chess, but it is a convenient way to store them.
Each playing piece is a "flat back". The paint on each piece is in good condition, with some flaking, as seen in the pictures. The set is complete and ready for your next chess game. This would be a wonderful gift. The set displays beautifully.
