Antique English Brass and Burl Walnut Writing Desk
The burl walnut is in very nice condition. There is a 2 1/4" hairline probably from age as you look at the lower left of the lid. Other than this, the walnut wood is in wonderful condition. The brass is equally in great condition.
In the open position, this writing desk has space for an ink well, pens and quills on the top part of the slope.
There are two writing flaps which open to beautifully polished storage spaces for paper and other writing materials. Under the upper writing flap you will see three "secret" drawers which are located behind the piece of wood which unhinges when you lift one of the slats in the space for pens on the top part of the box.
A key is provided to lock the upper flap inside the box. The box measures 17 15/16" wide, 10 7/16" deep, and 7 1/4" high.
We have three of these walnut burl boxes, each a different size, which may have been presentation boxes for employees of a 19th Century English firm. Or they could have been commissioned for a family, or company. It is also possible that as military boxes, they were made available to officers.
