Mother-of-Pearl Needle Case, (etui), 19th Century
A charming English Mother-of-Pearl needle case. The case has abalone shell edging on the top lid. All of this detail would have been hand set by one of the trusted artisans. This antique small case is a sewing needle case (etui). The case is in the same style of the Large English cutlery box and is lined in a red silk.
There is a silver cartouche on the top of the lid where initials could be engraved. This small case is in wonderful condition with NO chips or missing pieces.
The case measures: 2" on the back and is 1 3/4" on the front sloped front. This case is 1 1/2" at the widest back point and narrows to 3/4" across on the front and is 1" deep. This is a wonderful English sewing accessory and dates to the early 1800's-1850's. Usually the sewing accessory would have been kept in a large sewing box and each item would fit into a fitted space. Many of the large boxes have disappeared and a few of the beautiful items would be ignored. Thanks to all the collectors of beautiful antique sewing items, care is once again being given to the beautiful piece of times past.
