English Staffordshire "Flat Back" Figurine
Beautiful English, Mid-Victorian, Staffordshire figurine of what is referred to as a `group-figurine' with a Man and Women seated above a clock face. The setting of time, on the clock face, was left to the discretion of the worker doing the final hand-painting to the figurine. This is a larger English Staffordshire figure: 14" from base to top of Plumed Hat, 8" long and 3" wide and would be called a flat back figurine. (The mantles would have had a narrow width and this would fit nicely into the limited space.)
This figurine is in very nice condition with NO chips or repairs. There is the usual crazing to the final glaze from the kiln and a hard to see, kiln/clay split in one small area. There are a few tiny areas where some of the hand-painted color has rubbed off. The man is holding a set of bagpipes in both hands, wearing a plumed hat, has a scarf, kilt and sporran. The women has on a bodice, is holding a scarf over the decorated skirt. C. 1850-1860 This is a wonderful English Staffordshire Figurine that could be displayed on it own or in a grouping.
