Circa 1852- 1890. Superb English Victorian ivory inlaid ebony mirror in the Italian Renaissance style. The inlay, apart from the dominant ivory and bone is abalone, brass and silver wire. This type of furniture became popular after the first Great International Exhibition of Works of Art of All Nations, held in London in 1851. The first Great Exhibition was followed by some 19 further exhibitions staged all over the developed world before the end of the century. These exhibitions encouraged furniture makers to show the ultimate degree of their skills in both design and workmanship. This style gave prestige to its makers and showcased the best that man and machine working together could produce. This extraordinary example of 19th century design and craftsmanship is in excellent original condition with virtually no loss to the precious inlays or damage to the fine ebonized frame. The inlays are amazingly detailed and rather than describe the many different motifs we have taken many close up photos. The fine beveled mirror is also in excellent condition Original finish. Size, 51 1/2" tall x 34 1/2" wide x 3 1/2" deep. Price $5750.
