Original Fine Ink Wash, Coastal Landscape, Signed and Dated, PW Brunt, 1912
This is an unusual and fascinating piece in an unusual technique. The bold choice of ink wash for a nocturnal coastal scene is excellent! The dry brush technique combined with watercolor paper produces an image of deep and provocative mystery. The looming ship in the foreground takes on the appearance of a "ghost ship". The whole leads the imagination to such phenomena as the "Flying Dutchman" or the "Mary Celeste" or such literary legends as Cooleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner", Scott's "Rokeby" or even the "Demeter" from Bram Stroker's "Dracula", whose captain's corpse was tied to the steering wheel while the great ship entered the harbor surprisingly undamaged. Regardless of its source: This is a great little work in a well-matched frame!
