This green-eyed horned cloven-hoofed "monster" with gold polka dots is, to say the least, extremely unusual. A very kind browser has given me the following information: "This rather strange-looking creature is a "Yale", and is one of the mythical (or otherwise) animals of ancient English heraldic reps for various families, areas, or what have you. In this group there is also the Black Bull of Clarence, Red Dragon of Wales, the White Horse of Hanover, the Lion of England and, of course, this, the Yale of Beaufort, so well known and loved by us all (????)." Thanks so much, Elizabeth!
The inscribed words on the base are equally puzzling to me: "Crown Copyright" - "James Woodfod R. A." and "Margot."
