Magnificent Victorian Jeweled Girandole Earrings
In near mint condition, this pair of acid tested 18k yellow gold earrings has retained more than one style characteristics from the past. Superb cannetille work of tendrils, rosettes and coils offers the ultimate frame for the jewel-encrusted chandeliers for the ear.
It is unusual for a Victorian earring to incorporate opals cut en cabochon as the gem was quite scarce. This example avails itself of ten (10) fiery white opal cabochons for the pair. The chromatic interplay of the opals showcases streaks of read and orange, darts of vivid neon green and flames of strong peacock blue. The twelve (12) lush natural emeralds (with an estimated total weight of 1.06 carats) and eight (8) old mine cut diamonds (of a total estimated weight of 1.05 carats) which accent the 5.75 carat total of the opals create a symmetry and balance of form and style few Victorian pieces can emulate.
Date: Circa 1850.
Measurements: 2-3/16 inches (5.5 cm) in length including ear wire and 1-15/16 inches (5 cm) without by 13/16 of an inch (2.1 cm) at the widest. Weight of 13.4 grams (8.6 dwt) for the pair.
Condition: Superb; later 9k yellow gold ear wires. One area of reinforcement to gold on top of a bottom drop.
Note: Stones have not been removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting. All diamond and gemstone weights have been approximated by measurement and formula and may vary from actual weights.
