Articles from the AWATEA are rare indeed as she had such a short life. Launched in 1936 she was built at the Vickers Armstrong yards at Barrow as a 14.000 ton liner and cargo ship. In 1941after the outbreak of WW11 she was converted to a Troop Ship. The AWATEA was used to transport the NZEF to Egypt and was also used in the evacuation of Manila in 1940. At the assault on Algiers in 1942 the Awatea was carrying the 6th Commando Regiment into battle. It was folllowing this, on November the 8th 1942, that she was attacked and sank by German bombers when leaving the Port of Djidjelli.
