Fabulous Cast Iron "MERCURY" Door Knocker -1864

A wonderful old KENRICK & SONS of England large cast iron Door Knocker depicting the Roman God MERCURY....THE WINGED MESSENGER. The Knocker is 11" long and is around 2.5" wide.There is a registration lozenge on the back dating this piece to March 26 1864. In lovely condition as pictured.Mercury is a major Roman god, being one of the Dii Consentes within the ancient Roman pantheon. He is the patron god of financial gain, commerce, eloquence (and thus poetry), messages/communication (including divination), travelers, boundaries, luck, trickery and thieves; he is also the guide of souls to the underworld.He was considered the son of Maia and Jupiter in Roman mythology.
