A Very nice early Shaman's Medicine Container made from hand carved wood with a bone centre piece that is intricately carved and dyed with a depiction of the Batak Calender. The item measures 10 1/2" in length with a maximum height of 4 1/4".We think this dates to around the 1920's-30's or possibly earlier....in lovely condition and a very nice collectors piece. Some indigenous peoples of Indonesia inhabiting Sumatra, Kalimantan and other islands, have traditionally considered the shaman (who at the same time serves as sorcerer, witch-doctor, healer, fortune-teller, interpreter of dreams, sometimes narrator and even the chief) the most important person in a community. He helped find lost objects, increase strength and wealth and defeat enemies. The shaman's gift was usually inherited, but only a person chosen by the spirits could become a shaman.
