Rare Set of Victorian BELAYING PINS & Rail Mount Holder

A set of three Belaying Pins in original wooden rail bracket Holder. The pins are all 9 1/4" in length and the bracket holder is 11" long and 3" in width. The 'turned' wooden posts are 5 1/4" in length and the nuts look to be made of bronze....one bottom nut is missing. The turned posts do have splitting as seen in pictures. The rail shows remnants of old varnish but the posts and the pins themselves were bone dry so we have applied a coat of linseed oil to preserve them.belaying pin is a device used on traditional sailing vessels to secure lines of rigging. Their function on modern vessels has been replaced by cleats, but they are still used, particularly on square rigged ships. A belaying pin is a solid metal or wooden bar with a curved top portion and cylindrical bottom part. It is inserted into a hole in a wooden pinrail, which usually runs along the inside of the bulwarks (although free-standing pinrails called fife rails are also used). Although the belaying pin can be lifted out and removed, it is usually left in place.Belaying Pins were also used as 'improvised' weapons / clubs.
