This lovely old 'STICK' carries the marking of R.G & Co Patent on the base rim....this is the Mark for ROBERT GAINSFORD of Sheffield, England, who was registered in Sheffield in 1808. The Stick stands 9 3/4" tall when extended or 7 3/4" when depressed.....I have replaced the rubber interior washer which had well worn away. Note the fabulous Gadrooning work on the base and stem pieces. The base is 5" in diameter and in the usual Georgian manner is "filled" with various bits of tar and broken glass as weighting, There is wear of the Silver Plate with the base copper showing through....as is usual with a plated piece of this age that has been regularly polished over a long period. A most impressive Georgian Candle Stick dating to around 1810-1820.
