This was bought from a tribal leader in the New Guinea Highlands by a visiting New Zealander in 1969 so is at least 40 years old and probably somewhat older as it was not new when purchased. The War Axe / War Club measures 27" across and is 24" long. I'm told this quality of War Club is usually held by the Tribal Leader or Chief but if he is 'bested' in battle then the club is passed to the new Chief. The Chief strolls around with the club over his shoulder with the stone axe head held in a pouch but if 'trouble' beckons he then inserts the axe head. Note the wonderful fiber weaving over the wood and bark inner core. In the very damp and hot/humid New Guinea weather this type of item lasts only a short time before needing new woven materials.
