The only other brooch the same as this that I can find was sold by the London rooms of CHRISTIE'S in 1996 for 437 British Pounds or US$678 so it is indeed a rare and very sought after item relating to Nazi Germany and the Rigid Air Ship Era. This rare and rather fabulous old large brooch( 2 1/2" x 1 1/2") commemorating the GRAF ZEPPELIN'S North American trips is in beautiful condition. The makers name is clearly engraved on the back...there are no markings for Sterling Silver that I can see but the one sold by CHRISTIE'S was described as being of Sterling Silver so I am certain that this one is also. LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin (Deutsche Luftschiff Zeppelin #127; Registration: D-LZ 127) was a large German passenger carrying rigid airship which operated commercially from 1928 to 1937. It was named after the German pioneer of airships, Ferdinand von Zeppelin, who held the rank of Graf or Count in the German nobility. During its operating life the great airship made 590 flights covering more than a million miles. When the Nazi Party came to power in early 1933 they realised the propaganda value of the GRAF ZEPPELIN and very quickly had the swastika painted on her tail fins. We have had an email questioning the authenticity of this item but can find no real support for this...however all our items are TOTALLY GUARANTEED for FULL CREDIT under the relevant RUBYLANE policy.
