A most unusual Mask from the Sepik River area of Papua New Guinea. It is very hard to date such items as this but this looks to have 30 years or more age to it....with the wet and hot conditions in PNG items tend to rot and decay very quickly so an artifact of this age can well be thought of as "vintage". This one is most unusual in that a Tortoise shell has been used as the frame for the mask and baked clay has been added to form the features. This is all finished off with small cowrie shells and woven fibers. The mask is 12" x 10" in size. A highly collectible rare piece of native art.
