Australian Commonwealth Federation Brooch in 9 carat Gold, Sapphires & Pearls

This is a beautiful old piece of Victorian jewelery believed to be made to commemorate the Federation of Australia in 1901. The brooch is 9 carat gold and is hall marked on the back wIth a Unicorn and the letter W. There are six stars surrounding the relief map and these are done in alternating sapphires and grey pearls. I suppose they represent the six states in the Federation. The brooch measures 1" in diameter and an indicative Jeweler's estimate is in excess of NZ$600. I have seen this type of item in plain gold, without the jewels, selling in Australian antique shops for in excess of this figure. A great piece of Australiana.
