African Ndebele Marriage Doll

Doll is about 21" tall in very good condition to mint condition. The beads are wonderful. These dolls are from th Ndebele tribe in Southern Africa. One of the smallest tribes of the region, the Ndebeles are noted for there extraordinarily beautifully painted homes of brilliant colors that stand out like jewels in the drab countryside. There clothing is similarly colorful. The bead work of these Ndebele dolls is as detailed as the clothing on the women themselves. During courtship a suitor will place a doll outside a young woman's hut, indicating his intention to propose marriage to her. When a young woman is preparing to marry, she is given a doll that she names and cares for. Her first child is then named for the doll. This is a extra tall doll of this kind. I also have another doll like this one that is only 9" tall THAT DOLL IS $20.00. tHE LARGER DOLL HAS THE SILER NECKLACE.
