Dated 1844 -1845 English Silver Vinaigrette

This is an English Silver Very fine and fancy Vinaigrette. It is engraved in fancy rococo plumes and scrolls and swirling designs. This small Box measures 1 3/8" x 7/8" x 3/8" high. It has no Monogram. It has a Gold Wash on the inside and a fancy pierced Grate on the inside.The Grate on the inside measures 1 1/8" x 3/4". It is Hallmarked in several places on this wonderful piece. It has an "Anchor (for town mark of Birmingham ) ES (for Makers Marks/ Edward Smith ) a fancy U or V ( Date Letter ) " and on another part is is marked " Queen's Head / ES ( Makers Marks ) / Lion Passant ( Silver ). A vinaigrette is usually a small box with a hinged lid that opens to reveal a pierced grill which is also hinged, underneath the grill would be a small sponge soaked in an oily sweet smelling substance. Vinaigrettes were used both by men and women and generally carried whilst traveling, to give a pleasant aroma as the streets or traveling companions could often smell. Inside all the surfaces would be gilded to protect the silver from staining.
