Tacoma14,526 FT and a Water Inlet and Cabins. Tacoma History: Tacoma is the gateway to Mt. Rainier National Park and many recreational areas. The Tacoma Narrows suspension bridge links the city with the Olympic Peninsula; it replaced "Galloping Gertie," which collapsed (1940) in a windstorm four months after it opened. McChord Air Force Base, Fort Lewis (a major army training center), and Camp Murray (the state national guard headquarters) are nearby. Tacoma adopted its name after the nearby Mount Rainier, originally called Mount Tacoma or Mount Tahoma. It is known as the "City of Destiny" because the area was chosen to be the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the late 1800s. The decision of the railroad was influenced by Tacoma's neighboring Commencement Bay. By connecting the bay with the railroad Tacoma’s motto became “When rails meet sails.” Today Commencement Bay serves the Port of Tacoma, a center of international trade on the Pacific Coast. On the back of the Handle it shows Scenes of the Harbors with Boats, flower Blooms, City Hall and Tacoma Smelter. It is marked with the early Trademark for Joseph Mayer & Bros., Inc. The Bowl also shows a Scene of Mount Tacoma, TACOMA across the bowl, High School & Stadium and the Oldest Church Tower in America. This is an Excellent example of the Wonderful Souvenir Spoons that were produced.
