Small & Delicate Sterling Silver Overlay Perfume Bottle

This is a Small & Delicate Sterling Silver Overlay Perfume Bottle. The Bottle feels more light weight as it has a hollow stopper. Stopper: The stopper is blown glass, hollow and is ball shaped. It has (3) Art Nouveau swirling lines that come together at the Top and swirl around the stopper. It has no silver on the neck of the stopper. The stopper measures 1 5/8" in length and is 7/8" across. Perfume: The Bottle measures 3 7/8" tall with the stopper in the bottle, 2 1/2" in length and is 2 1/8" across the perfume bottom, 7/8" across the ground bottom and 7/8" across the top of the bottle. The collar, the very top flat surface of the bottle is covered with silver overlay and is covered under the collar with silver overlay and down the neck of the collar. It has been damaged, cracked, on the neck, inside of the collar that is covered with Sterling Overlay. This however, does not show at all when the stopper is placed into the neck. It has a slight staining in the ground bottom of the bottle. It has no engraved number on the stopper or the bottle, but it fits tightly into the bottle. It is not Monogrammed and does not have place to engrave one. Two American companies, Gorham & Alvin, dominated the scene and created some of the most exquisite examples available using thick overlays of sterling silver. They both used glass blanks from the Steuben glassworks. Another honorable mention is the La Pierre company, though not as highly detailed as Gorham or Alvin, but nonetheless, beautiful bottles. These higher end bottles usually have an area where a monogram could be engraved, often you will find bottles with owners name or initials in fancy flourishing script. We find this adds a lot of charm to the bottles as well as their History as the engraving is a work of art, which has become almost a lost art. As there are numerous bottles that have cracks in the glass, it is suspected that this is a common occurrence with bottles which have thicker overlay.
